Direct Cyprus Nicosia

Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus with a history dating back 5000 years.

Sadly, Cyprus was invaded by Turkey in 1974 leaving 36 percent of the island illegally occupied. This includes half of the islands capital, now the last divided capital in the world. The old city of Nicosia is extremely quaint where the small narrow streets are lined with traditional Greek Cypriot shops. The centre of the old city is known as Laiki Geitonia (in English this means popular neighbourhood) where one may find many shops and cafes. Ledra street, which runs through the centre of Laiki Geitonia also leads to the border crossing through to the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus. This border crossing opened in 2003 allowing many Greek Cypriots to cross over to the northern side for the first time since 1974.The more modern Nicosia has grown around the old city walls which was built between 1567 and 1570 by the Venetians to fend off attacks. The wall along with the three gates is still in good condition today, a must see for all interested in history.
